How is EXIF data stored in a JPEG file?

EXIF data is stored in a JPEG APP1 segment, which starts near the beginning of the file. The segment begins with the bytes FF E1, followed by the segment length, then the ASCII string 'Exif  '. After this header comes a TIFF-structured block containing IFD (Image File Directory) entries, each specifying a tag number, data type, count, and value. This allows parsers to read individual fields without loading the entire file.

What is image orientation in EXIF?

EXIF orientation (tag 0x0112) indicates how the camera was held when the photo was taken. It has 8 possible values representing rotations and flips: 1 = normal, 3 = 180° rotated, 6 = 90° clockwise, 8 = 90° counter-clockwise.
